Lara Dimitrijevic, a lawyer, activist and founder of one of Malta’s leading women’s rights NGOs, has suggested that a recent major pro-life protest in Valletta attracted a lower turnout than its organisers had estimated.

“I highly doubt there were 20,000 people,” Dimitrijevic said in an interview with Lovin Malta, playing down the crowd size estimate provided by Life Network Foundation.

When asked about the intense condemnation of the proposed legal amendment from the pro-life camp, Dimitrijevic explained that while she was not surprised by the turn-out she is perplexed at the narrative that this group is trying to push.

“Somehow they agree with abortion when there is threat to life but then they have an issue when there are medical complications to health that is in grave jeopardy. And that is a no.”

“For me, it’s a little bit insensitive to those women who experience that situation because do we really want women to be put in a situation where they’re losing their life when I can prevent it from before?”

She went on to explain that the law won’t permit abortions for somewhat minor issues, rather it will be allowed for cases when serious action is necessary, otherwise the life of the pregnant person can become threatened.

Dimitrijevic sat down with Lovin Malta to talk about some of the most topical national debates, including the abortion law amendment and the major reaction that came after it.

The full interview shows an in-depth conversation on the lawyer’s professional opinions and clarifications of some misconceptions of the bill.

It also covers topics like sexual health, domestic violence and femicide.

The full interview will be out in the coming days, so keep your eyes peeled for an informative video with a woman who has spearheaded the pro-choice movement in Malta and can proficiently understand the legal implications of the amendment.

Do you think that 20,000 attendees is an accurate estimate of the pro-life demonstration?
