Prime Minister Robert Abela visited Maltese patients receiving treatment in London this week, where he announced that the government is preparing to add ten cancer medicines to the national formulary, making them free of charge.

This change forms part of a transitional move in which the government will take over responsibility for covering the cost of cancer medicines from the Malta Community Chest Fund.

Until the change is fully in place, patients will continue receiving support through the fund.

The Prime Minister visited patients being treated at the Royal Marsden Hospital, one of the world’s leading oncology centres, where he was welcomed by consultant Dr Francesca Sillito.

He also spent time with a Maltese patient currently undergoing treatment and met Maltese surgeon Matthew Schembri, who works at the hospital and specialises in robotic treatment for prostate cancer and the use of artificial intelligence in patient care.

During the visit, Abela presented a government donation to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity to support ongoing research projects, including early detection and personalised treatment.

Abela, who is the first Maltese Prime Minister to visit Puttinu Cares in London, was accompanied by Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela and his wife Lydia Abela.

Together with representatives from Puttinu Cares, they also visited the charity’s apartments in Sutton, where they met Maltese families staying there during treatment.

It was noted how current government support covers travel costs not only for one person accompanying the patient but also for a second person when needed.

The delegation also toured Puttinu Cares’ new property in central London, where more apartments are being developed to house Maltese and Gozitan families closer to medical facilities.

The building will be named after the late Dr Victor Calvagna, with new permits allowing an extra floor to be added.

Once completed, the apartments will accommodate up to 80% of the families who need a place to stay while receiving treatment in the UK.

Abela’s visit ended with a stop at the Franciscan Sisters in London, who also provide support to Maltese families during their time abroad.

Puttinu Cares President Angele Cuschieri thanked the Maltese public for their ongoing support and encouraged people to contribute to the charity’s Good Friday fundraising marathon, which will help fund the new apartment project in London.
