Saint James Hospital Group Urges Collaboration In Light Of MAM Industrial Dispute

Saint James Hospital Group has responded to the ongoing industrial dispute declared by the Medical Association of Malta (MAM), expressing support for the recent initiative to partner with private hospitals for category 3, 4, and 5 emergency services.
This measure, announced by the state, aims to ease waiting times at Mater Dei Hospital and has been described as a positive step toward addressing the strain on the national healthcare system.
The Group emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships in reducing the pressure on Malta’s public healthcare framework.
It highlighted how such collaborations could improve efficiency, lower costs, and reduce duplication of services between the public and private sectors. These partnerships, already implemented in other EU countries, have proven to be effective in addressing healthcare challenges.
Malta’s healthcare system has faced significant pressure to remain sustainable, and the Group has consistently advocated for innovative models that encourage collaboration between public and private providers.
It underscored the need for a unified approach that prioritises patient welfare, increases accessibility, and shortens waiting lists for critical services.
The organisation also pointed out that greater synergy between the public and private sectors could create a more effective and complementary healthcare system.
Rather than operating in silos, both sectors could work together to deliver better outcomes for patients while addressing systemic inefficiencies.
Saint James Hospital Group called on MAM and the authorities to prioritise constructive dialogue and resolve their differences promptly.
It emphasised the shared goal of ensuring the welfare of patients, as well as the medical and supporting staff, while working towards a sustainable future for Malta’s healthcare system.
