‘Shaming or Stigmatising Doesn’t Help,’ LGBTQ+ Rights Activist Reminds In Light Of Malta’s First Mpox Case
LGBTQ+ rights activist Clayton Mercieca shared an important reminder in light of the recent detection of mpox in Malta: “it’s crucial that we all take a stand against shaming anyone who contracts the virus.”
“Shaming or stigmatizing people doesn’t help; in fact, it discourages those affected from seeking diagnosis, treatment, and support. This only makes it harder to prevent further spread,” Mercieca, who’s also the head of the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression and Sex Characteristics Unit at the Human Rights Directorate wrote on social media.
“Let’s focus on compassion, support, and staying informed to keep our community safe.”
Earlier this morning, the health authorities released a statement confirming a case of sexually transmitted mpox in Malta. They stated that the person who contracted the virus is clinically stable and isolated.
Amid the international outbreak of the virus, news outlets around the world began reporting that men who have sex with men became victimised by stigma and shame. Subsequently, activists and organisations began shedding light on the harm these marginalising tactics cause, with people reportedly not seeking medical attention as a result.
