Charmaine Gauci, Malta’s Superintendent of Public Health, has issued a precautionary warning for the upcoming heatwave.

Over the next couple of days we will be experiencing high temperatures of 36°C and 37°C.

This can result in dehydration, heat stroke and could possibly lead to death.

She warns that common symptoms include feeling weak, faint, sick, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps, excessive sweating and thirst.

Although the heatwave can affect anyone, some people run greater risks. Older people, especially those over 75 years, babies and young children should be well looked after. People with chronic conditions, health issues and those who work outside are also at a greater risk.

The Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate have shared some tips:

  • Avoid going out between 11am and 4pm
  • Stay cool indoors
  • Drink water regularly
  • Wear light clothing

Should you need health advice you are encouraged to call 21231231 or call 112 for emergency situations.

Make some time and go check in on your older relatives this week!
