After the first Dar Bjorn opened in 2017 in Qormi, the second specialised home dedicated to people with neurodegenerative conditions like ALS has finally opened in Żebbuġ.

In an opening ceremony that saw Bjorn Formosa, his partner Maria, the entire ALS Malta team as well as Prime Minister Robert Abela and his wife Lydia Abela, Inclusion Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli and Opposition Leader Bernard Grech in attendance, the new home was shown off for the first time.

In a live stream from the opening ceremony, patients and family members excitedly praised the new home, a home that’s been years in the making.

During one particularly emotional moment, a man whose wife had passed away while in Dar Bjorn sent a tribute to the home, telling Bjorn and Maria that they’ve truly been able to turn a horrific situation into something positive that will last for years to come.

“Thank you, Bjorn and Maria.”

30 patients will be living in the home, which is fitted out with the latest specialised equipment to offer a comfortable, secure and safe space to ALS patients and others, including those with MS or Huntington’s Disease.

The home is over eight floors and will also include a chapel, pool and meeting areas for a holistic approach to life.
