A new emergency department will open in Paola by next summer to relieve the pressure on Mater Dei, Health Minister Chris Fearne has pledged.

Interviewed on TVM’s Insights, Fearne said that the emergency department will open at the Ċensu Moran health centre, which is currently under construction and is set to open in May.

“It will serve people who live in the south of Malta and will have its own emergency centres” Fearne said. “Many cases that are currently being seen at Mater Dei will start being treated there, and we will therefore reduce the load on Mater Dei.”

Fearne said that around 300-400 people currently visit Mater Dei’s emergency department every day.

“If even a third of these people start going to Paola, we will significantly reduce the load on Mater Dei,” he said, adding that long-term plans to expand the Msida hospital’s emergency centre are also underway.
