Bailey’s journey on Earth is unfortunately coming to a premature end. The adorable puppy, who stole the hearts of the Maltese nation when he was found abandoned in a cardboard box with all of his legs paralysed will be put down after he was found to be suffering from a degenerative disease.

Dog rescue team Rescued Is My Favourite Breed announced the sad news on its Facebook page today.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we have to announce that Bailey’s test results have confirmed our worst fears…Bailey is suffering from a degenerative disease,” the rescue team said. “We are devastated and still struggling to accept that there is nothing more that can be done. It is just so hard… There are no words. We just want to say that we thank you, especially to all who helped make Bailey’s last weeks so special. Thank you.

We are taking Bailey by the sea one last time… then we have to let him go. We cannot let him suffer when it is a certainty that he cannot get better… only worse. We are all heartbroken. But we will all be by Bailey’s side.”

Bailey was found abandoned in a cardboard box last August, completely unable to move. Although the cards were stacked against him, his rescuers and his new foster family were determined to turn the little puppy’s life around and heal his legs from their condition.

For a while, it seemed as though they might succeed. Bailey attended regular physiotherapy sessions and was making steady progress, even managing to move a leg without any help.

However, his rescuers feared from the start that he could have been suffering from a degenerative disease and, unfortunately, this has now proven to be the case.

Rest in peace, little one
