Here’s What You Should Be Doing With Your Old Phones In Malta

With the iPhone 8’s announcement around the corner, all your Apple-obsessed Maltese friends are probably looking to get that new upgrade. If you’re more into Android, great choices like the new Samsung, LG, Sony, OneTouch and Essential Phone are all readily available. But what happens to your old phone when you move onto the newest, shiniest toy? Do you let them gather dust in a drawer somewhere, or just throw them away?

What you really should be doing is recycling your old electronics, and you can’t just dump them near the recycling bins either.

Just throwing away old phones and computers can have catastrophic environmental effects. Besides just filling up the landfill in Magħtab, the trace amounts of mercury, lead, cadmium, barium and lithium in electronics can seep into our groundwater system and create potentially toxic results.

“Okay” you’re thinking, “but where do I actually go to recycle this stuff?” Well the answer is a little tricky. While there are six Civic Amenity sites in Malta and Gozo where you can take this kind of waste, there are some restrictions.

For one, it’s better to take in bulk, if you’ve just got one phone then it’s not going to be worth your time to go. Better wait until you have a box-load of old gear, or take it alongside a big item like a fridge or TV.

Second, if you want to drop off the stuff yourself, you need a car. The sites don’t accept pedestrian walk-ins for safety reasons. And If you’ve got anything other than a car, say a truck or a van, you’ll need to fill in this form and register the vehicle you’ll be using. If you don’t have any kind of vehicle, your best bet is to contact your local council. Some of them offer drop off points where small Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) items can be disposed of.

Third, depending on what kind of vehicle you have, you’ve got a limited number of entries into the Civic Amenity sites per year. It’s to encourage people to reuse more instead of always chucking things away the second a better version comes along.

The CA sites are located at

·        Mriehel

·        Maghtab

·        Hal Far

·        Luqa

·        Ta Qali
