Dark Malta Tours, recently launched by ex-BBC journalist Mario Cacciottolo, offers a unique and chilling experience for those interested in the darker and more unusual side of Maltese history.

Cacciottolo’s meticulous research from odd books and old archives has provided him with a wealth of material to create a series of walking tours that delve into the terrible and strange stories from Malta’s dark past.

Mario told Lovin Malta: “I’ve been researching the darker side of Maltese history for many years, just for my personal interest. Then I began to realise I had so much material that I could put together a number of dark history walking tours to tell tales of the terrible and stories of the strange from Malta’s dark past”.

With tours covering the oldest cities in Malta, Valletta, Mdina, and Birgu, participants can expect to uncover the hidden secrets and haunting tales that lie within the narrow streets and historical sites of these locations.

Mario’s approach to his research is akin to journalism, ensuring that his tours are based on verified accounts and factual information, including the ghost stories he shares. He extensively sources stories from the National Library, the National Archives, rare books which sometimes come at a high cost, and academic studies by historians.

By combining his passion for obscure history with his journalism background, Cacciottolo aims to enlighten, inform, and entertain visitors with his rich collection of tales.

Whether you are a history enthusiast or simply seeking a thrilling experience, Dark Malta Tours promises to deliver a chilling factor that will leave you in awe as you explore the dark underbelly of Maltese history.

Bookings can be made online according to your preferred theme and city. The Dark Malta Tours take place in the evening around Valletta, Birgu and Mdina, as well as a daytime tour around St John’s Co-Cathedral.
