Heritage Malta, in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Herald of Arms of Malta, has unveiled a landmark heraldic publication- the first of its kind to comprehensively document coats of arms issued under Malta’s heraldic authority since its inception.

Titled “The Register of Arms, Volume 1 (2019–2024)”, the richly illustrated, hardbound book marks the beginning of a series dedicated to preserving and showcasing the nation’s heraldic heritage. Compiled by Dr Charles A. Gauci, Chief Herald of Arms of Malta and Chev. Raymond M. Cassar, Registrar of the Office, the volume features the personal coats of arms of 133 armigers and the heraldic descriptions, or blazons, of 70 more.

The publication also includes standards, badges and pedigrees, as well as coats of arms belonging to various entities and prominent national figures, including George Vella and Charles Scicluna.

Beyond its artistic and cultural value, the register highlights the evolving role of Malta’s heraldic authority, which is legally empowered to grant and register arms both locally and internationally.

Contrary to common belief, heraldry isn’t reserved for nobility- the Office grants or registers arms to individuals and organisations from diverse backgrounds and countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and beyond.

The book also delves into the symbolism of heraldry, with extensive details on mottos, cries of war, and hereditary honours, offering a rare glimpse into how this centuries-old tradition remains vibrant today.

For those curious about obtaining their own coat of arms, the publication provides insight into the application process and the artistic and symbolic significance behind each design.

The Register of Arms, Volume 1 (2019–2024) paves the way for future editions, continuing the documentation of Malta’s heraldic legacy.

The book is available for purchase online through Heritage Malta’s official store and at all Heritage Malta museums and sites.
