Pre-World War I Explosive Discovered During Excavation In Malta

An unexpected wartime relic was unearthed in Malta this week after construction workers stumbled upon an unexploded ordnance dating back to before the First World War.
The Ammunition and Explosives Squadron of the 3rd Regiment within the Armed Forces of Malta was called in to assess the discovery. A specialised team from the EOD, IEDD and Divers Platoon was immediately deployed to investigate.
The ordnance was confirmed to be a 5.5-inch British Armour-Piercing Solid Shot, a type of heavy ammunition used in pre-WWI weaponry. It was safely removed from the site without incident, ensuring the continued safety of workers and nearby residents.
While such discoveries are rare, Malta’s long and complex military history means these relics do occasionally resurface — particularly in areas undergoing development or excavation.
Authorities have reminded the public that if they ever come across any suspicious objects during outdoor works or construction, they should immediately contact emergency services and avoid touching or moving the item.
The Armed Forces of Malta continue to play a vital role in neutralising historical threats and preserving public safety, more than a century after these weapons were first brought to the island.
