Just hours after the world celebrated Earth Day, photos have emerged of a number of dumped appliances in a large crevice in Il-Majjistral Park in Mellieħa.
A public post by Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park explained how the illegally dumped home appliances were found.
“A family enjoying the park noticed that some moron dumped three water heaters down the cliffs. These have now joined a TV and other articles which were also dumped recently,” the nature park said in its post.
Even though there are very easy ways of getting rid of large home appliances and other bulky waste, it seems the litterers had gone to the extra mile, taking these water heaters across the park, just to dump them into this specific crevice.
There is the obvious environmental impact of throwing large home appliances into vulnerable nature parks, but there’s another reason not to throw your water heaters into cliff crevices.
“Apart from the fact that a clean up of such an area needs to be done professionally as it will include abseiling, we also discourage such activities at this time of the year so as not to disturb breeding Blue Rock Thrushes (Merill – our National bird), which find the cliffs in the park suitable for nesting,” they said.
The park administrators said they are hoping to organise another clean up on the area beneath the cliffs in Autumn, but many people commented online about how disgraceful this behaviour is.
