What To Do If You Have One Off Weekday In Malta This Summer

Article Featured Image

While most of us would be looking forward to the weekend to make the most of Malta’s flawless weather, a combination of oddly-timed public holidays or randomly-taken leave days might leave you with a free weekday this summer. If you’re a little lost on what to do and are worried it’s going to be a lazy extension of Sunday, here are some suggestions.

1. Kick things off on the eve with sunset drinks

One of the best things about having a free weekday is actually the night before, and how you can stay up later than usual. And with so many great places to get sunset cocktails you’re going to be spoilt for choice.

2. Check out (a slightly quieter) Paceville

If you’ve decided to take an off day without it being a public holiday, there’s a big chance that Paceville will not be that busy on whatever weekday eve you decide to go up. And if you haven’t been in a while, perhaps that’s the best way to rediscover the clubbing hub.

3. A day at the beach is always a winner

The only problem with this is picking one beach from all the beautiful beaches in Malta. If you’ve chosen your favourite, however, a day at the beach is the perfect way to cool down on a free weekday. Just be careful of the high temperatures and even higher UV indexes which are about to hit our islands.

If you’re not a big fan of beaches, you can always check out some of Malta’s amazing outdoor pools and lidos instead.

4. Catch a water taxi to Valletta

This one is perfect for summer. The ferry out of Marsamxett Harbour leaves every half an hour, and solves all your traffic problems while offering an alternate view of Malta’s capital. You can also go for a more romantic, gondola-style ferry.

It’s a win-win way of doing something a little special on your off day.

5. Check out some of Malta’s museums

While the museums around Malta are closed on public holidays, most of them are open pretty much every single morning. The full information on the different museums’ opening hours can be found here.

If you live in Malta but have never been to a museum, beautiful church, or fascinating temple before, dedicate some time in the morning on an off day to do so. You definitely won’t regret it.

6. Go on a road trip to somewhere you’ve never been

This might seem difficult to believe, but trust us; it’s possible to discover a new spot in Malta you’ve never been to before. Plan for an afternoon of going to that one spot on the island you’ve never had to go drive to, and prepare to be pleasantly surprised by this tiny gorgeous island.

7. Get a cheeky slice of cake with a view in Mdina

An evergreen winner, Fontanella Tea Garden definitely benefits from the Maltese summers. With umbrellas and a roofed area on the terrace, it’s a great place to soak up the sun while not melting away.

Oh, and don’t forget that cake.

8. Go abseiling

Just in case you’re looking into a more adventurous way of spending your off day, here’s your answer. Perfect weather, a gorgeous view, and a generous helping of OhGodPleaseNoWhyAmIDoingThis. It’ll all be worth it at the end!

Check out Abseiling Malta and Rock Adventure Malta to see what’s happening when.

9. Spend a day in Comino

As summer rolls on, Comino will keep getting busier and busier. And while this will end up being the case on every single day, the weekends are definitely worse. If you’ve got a free weekday and have been looking into going (back) to the small piece of paradise between Malta and Gozo, go for it. It’s not one of the most popular destinations on the archipelago for nothing.
