IN PHOTOS: Valletta’s New Lascaris Ditch Has Finally Been Completed
After a couple of delays, and even though it was initially meant to be ready a year ago for the 2018 Capital of Culture activities, the Valletta Ditch restoration project (which has completely upgraded and revitalised City Gate) is finally ready!
The red ribbon will be cut in the next few days which will see it be open to the public… although an official date has yet to be confirmed.
The ditch and garden (which also includes the old railway bridge that used to connect the now-defunct station to a tunnel near Bieb il-Bombi) will be named after 16th century Italian architect Francesco Laparelli, who was hired by Pope Pius V to build Valletta.
The launch of this €5 million project will result in a car park which can hold around 100 cars being back in business, but the car park will not be available to the public and will be exclusive for public service employees with a special permit.
Everyone else will however be able to access the ditch from Marsamxett Road or through the stairs or lift close to the Parliament.
