Near-Death Experience: Steve Mercieca Reveals Harrowing Details of ‘Impulsive’ Zorb Ball Accident

Popular entrepreneur and philanthropist Steve Mercieca is the latest guest on local podcast Mind Over Chatter and the episode is set to feature the 36-year-old opening up on a horrific accident which nearly claimed his life a couple of years ago.

Mercieca and his friend Keith were involved in a Zorb ball accident in Għajn Tuffieħa’s Riviera Martinique beach which saw the pair plummet some three storeys down the cliffs on the evening of 18th July 2017.

“I broke my neck, and the doctors told me I was a millimetre away from instant death,” Steve had told Lovin Malta in an interview some months after the accident. “My phrenic nerve would’ve collapsed and I wouldn’t have been able to breathe. They weren’t sure if I would walk, no one knew.”

Now, over half a decade since the near-death experience, Mercieca has opened up once again on that fateful afternoon, telling Mind Over Chatter hosts David OZI Borg and Andrew Hogg all about that day and the “instant regret” he felt.

“You had zero recollection of gravity, the ball was going super fast,” Mercieca says in a clip teasing the upcoming episode.

“And then, at the bottom of the hill, it hit a little nudge. And in our theory, this little nudge must have flung me into Keith’s ribs. And I broke my neck on his ribs.”

A relatively new podcast set on helping to break the mental health stigma, Mind Over Chatter’s latest episode is set to be a packed one, especially considering Mercieca’s very eventful life.

In one other point, he also talks about that time he decided to jump out of a plane naked!
Mercieca’s episode premieres tonight on Mind Over Chatter, which is one of the latest collaborations with Lovin Malta.
