Lovin Malta ‘Lassana’ Documentary On International Migrants Day Film Festival Shortlist
Lovin Malta’s 2020 documentary Lassana has been selected for Maltese edition of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Global Migration Film Festival (GMFF).
Since 2016, the United Nations through its IOM arm, has marked International Migrants Day with the GMFF. Celebrated annually on the 18th December, state branches are encouraged to hold local GMFF screenings of films to help encourage debate, educate audience and inform the masses about the realities of migration.
Locally, the GMFF will be take place on Friday 17th December at 18:30, and will be held at Valletta Campus Theatre, Old University as a free-of-charge event!
IOM Malta will be screening three short movies:
- Elephantbird (2018, Iran): directed by Amir-Masoud Soheili, Elephantbird is an adaptation of an Afghan short story following an old Afghan man who wishes to give his elephant-bird (turkey) to his grandchild, but this simple wish is hard to realise
- Burner of Ships (2020, Italy): set to the backdrop of the Italian countryside, 14-year-old Nausicaa develops an infatuation with the young man her upper-class family welcomes into their home
- Lassana (2020, Malta) a Lovin Malta documentary, the short explores the life, family and political discussions surrounding Lassana Cisse Souleymane, an Ivorian man who was shot dead in Malta in a racially motivated attack back in 2019
IOM Malta elaborated on the event, explaining that the aim is to share different narratives of migration through the medium of film. Additionally, the IOM’s film festival aims to capture the unique contributions of migrants in their new communities, to make audiences think beyond the preconceived notions and stereotypes that might exist within their own respective echo-chambers.
