Every year on the 8th of June, the world celebrates the big, blue ocean. And what with countless news posts constantly reminding us how badly we’ve messed it up, we’re more than ecstatic to be able to devote one day to its complete and untainted adoration.
Malta’s National Aquarium is also all about bigging up the ocean on this special day, and has planned a full day of family fun for all undersea fans!
Admittedly, the National Aquarium celebrates the ocean every day, but tomorrow, it will bring together all marine-life related NGOs in one place to deliver a variety of different exhibitions, stands and activities.
Here’s what families can expect as they head on down to the Aquarium.
1. Pjazza Exhibitions (10am till 6pm)
Where guests can experience and learn all about underwater life, from sharks, to dolphins to birds and even recycling.
2. Clean Up (9am till 12pm)
Guest can participate in a clean up, taking place along the promenade from the Aquarium towards seashells. How’s that for actually giving back to the ocean?
3. Bottle Cap Count and Photo (from 2pm)
Guests will be invited to help us count the amount of bottle caps the Aquarium has accumulated so far, each of which will be used in a special artwork sending a message to the sea.
4. Trash Hunt (10am till 6pm)
Whilst visiting the Aquarium, kids can go on their own trash hunt where finding trash is exchanged for gifts!
5. World Oceans Day Talk (12.30pm)
With the backdrop of the Aquarium’s beautiful main tank window, guest will be invited to gather and listen to a special World Ocean Day talk.
World Ocean Day was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Now more than ever, we need to take the time to create awareness about the vital role the ocean plays in our ecosystem. We need to educate our children to respect and take care of the ocean. And if we can do all this whilst having a grand old time… well there’s nothing much wrong with that is there?
