Join Malta’s Tree-volution: Which Trees Will Look Best In Your Home?

Article Featured Image

Trees are great. They give us cool shade, juicy fruit, and they also give you a good amount of privacy if placed strategically on your balcony. But while Malta might have enough blue, we definitely need some more green.

Join the tree-volution today and get your own oxygenbaby to show off to everyone you meet. It could be a mini tree, or a giant, muscular, hunk of a tree. It doesn’t matter as long as it’s a tree and you’re totally in love with it.

Here’s a list of dwarf-sized trees which don’t take up much space and look adorable AF.

1. Dwarf olive tree

These babies can grow up to only six feet and they look super cute. It also takes them years and years to grow that big, so don’t worry.

Pruning them is not too hard, and their fragrant creamy flowers will give your home a lovely touch.

You can also turn your dwarf olive tree into a bonsai. These guys need a bit more maintenance to keep, but it’s well worth it.

Since they thrive in Mediterranean climates, these cuties can be left in full direct sunlight all year round.

2. Stephanotis

This is hands down the best smelling flowering plant ever. Fine, it’s not technically a tree, but it sure does grow like one.

You can grow these babes both inside and out, however they prefer being on the outside with ample amounts of shade.

A trellis should be provided for the stephanotis, as it’s a climber plant and it will go crazy if it doesn’t have a hero to hold onto.

3. Bay tree

This total babe grows lavishly in the wild. Their leaves can be used to flavour pretty much any dish under the sun. These are natives to the Mediterranean and can be grown both indoors and outdoors.

It’s a slow-growing plant and if kept in a container it will maintain a dainty size. They adore being in full sun, but they also enjoy a bit of shade too, as long as you keep them humid, they’re happy.

4. Dwarf peach

These adorable trees can totally grow like a boss in your balcony. Their ideal method of growth is in a small-ish space, so it’s ok to keep them in a pot. Try and opt for a natural dwarf peach tree as the regular ones are a total beast and will grow up to be unruly teens.

Apart from looking cute and sassy, this little tree will bear you yummy fruits to snack on whenever. Bless.

5. Kumquats

This cool AF citrus plant is native to China but grows well in our climate. You should keep the soil moist but not completely wet, as it might cause the roots to rot. These plants like sunny spots and large pots, so keep your kumquat outside if you don’t have enough pot space.

They really hate the cold, so during wintertime you should really drag this babe inside. These guys will also give you the tasty kumquat — a tiny bittersweet fruit you can eat with the peel and all.

6. Fig tree

Fig trees are the bee’s knees. They give us amazing fruits, they look beautiful and they are relatively easy to grow in Malta’s climate.

They like bigger pots and simply adore sunlight.

The only problem you might get with these plants is the birds trying to nab at your delicious fruits. That’s nothing to worry about, because it’s not like your tree will be producing fruits all-year round.

7. Dwarf lemon tree

The tiny lemon tree really enjoy being out in the sun, so ideally do not leave them inside for too long. Their worst enemy is freezing temperature, so that’s one thing you don’t need to worry about here.

You need to give these babes a bit of attention, they like being pruned and pinched, which helps make them bushier and more cosy looking.

These trees also dislike strong winds, so be careful with that when it comes to it.

8. Pineapple tree

This tree can surprisingly be grown both indoors and outdoors. You need to promise and deliver at least six hours of sunlight each day to this magical tree, and in return it will reward you with an actual pineapple.

Are you still not sure about getting one? These steel machines are practically indifferent to pests and only have one pest-y enemy, mealybugs. These guys can be easily killed off with a mixture of soapy water and lemon juice. Did you see how cute it looks?
