10% Of People In Malta Self-Identify As Asexual
Around 10% of people in Malta identify as asexual, a greater percentage than those who identify as bisexual or homosexual, a new survey has found.
Misco’s survey, in which 424 respondents participated, found that 77% of people identify as heterosexual, while 10% identify as asexual, 3% identify as gay or lesbian, and 3% as bisexual. The others refused to answer the question.
Asexual people can also identify as straight, gay, lesbian or bisexual depending on whether they feel romantic (but not sexual) attraction to a particular sex. Other asexual people don’t experience any kind of sexual or romantic attraction whatsoever toward anyone.
Misco’s survey shows that asexuality is relatively split across age lines, though two cohorts particularly identified as asexual more than others.
12.4% of people who identify as asexual are aged between 16-24, 30.5% of them are between 25-34, 10% are between 35-44, 5.1% are between 45-54, 10.9% are between 55-64, and the remaining 31% are older than 64.
The majority of asexual people (53.7%) are male, while the remaining 46.3% are women.
Similar demographics can be spotted among bisexual people, with men making up 59.6% of those who identified as such, and homosexual people, where men make up 74.3% of the cohort.
Misco’s survey was conducted among a random sample of 424 respondents, with people selected from the consultancy firm’s proprietary online panel, which was created using random probability sampling in accordance with best practices.
Interviews were conducted using an online methodology and data was weighted according to age, gender, and region to bring the results in line with what is known about the Maltese population.
