Malta Pride organisers Allied Rainbow Communities (ARC) have decided to collaborate with Andre’s Cases  and buy €250 worth of pride-themed phone covers after its business owner was badgered with homophobic messages.

“After coming across the article, we reached out to Andre’s Cases and agreed to create a EuroPride Valletta 2023 collab with Pride-themed phone cases. And as an act of solidarity we decided to buy €250 worth of the cases from the Pride collection,” ARC leader Clayton Mercieca said.

Andre Borg opened up about the homophobia that he faces regularly on his business’s social media channels.

Screenshots uploaded sow how people would message the business page under the pretence of purchasing a customised cover. However, they would then start to shame his for his sexuality by saying things like “kemm int gay” or purely mock him by calling him a “liba”.

Some would also ask for bizarre designs, like a phone cover with a condom on the back, or one with a monkey showing his penis.

Lovin Malta spoke to Andre to hear more about the effects of such harassment on an LGBTIQ+ person.

“It feels downgrading and demoting to have people that shame you on your sexuality and send explicit pictures just to harass you for their ‘entertainment’.”

“These things could ruin someone’s self-esteem, especially if they are finding a hard time coming out leaving no options for the person by staying closeted and living a lie, in some cases not handling the stress of it all which leads to a person to attempt suicide because society won’t let them live the way they would like to,” he explained.

This comes only days after the end of a successful Malta Pride Week 2022, with the commemorative month still being mid-way through.
