Malta Launches Strategy And Action Plan For LGBTIQ+ Equality With 94 New Measures
The Maltese government has announced the launch of a new comprehensive Strategy and Action Plan for LGBTIQ+ Equality, covering the years 2023 to 2027.
This significant development was unveiled by Rebecca Buttigieg, the Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms and Equality, on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).
The Strategy and Action Plan aims to address the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTIQ+ individuals and promote equality in various sectors.
It encompasses 10 key areas and includes a staggering 94 measures designed to combat discrimination and improve treatment across multiple aspects of society.
These measures span areas such as employment, education, healthcare, sports, and research.
One important focus of the strategy is to fight against hate speech and the spread of misinformation.
The plan emphasises the need for educational campaigns to raise awareness and foster sensitivity within the broader society. By doing so, the government hopes to create a more inclusive and accepting environment for all.
To ensure effective implementation, the measures outlined in the plan will be coordinated by the Unit for Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sex Characteristics (SOGIGESC) within the Directorate for Human Rights. Collaboration with various ministries and public entities will be sought to drive the successful execution of these initiatives.
Parliamentary Secretary Buttigieg highlighted the extensive consultation process that informed the strategy, including inputs from the LGBTIQ+ Consultative Council, which consists of representatives from civil society and other social partners.
This inclusive approach ensures that the plan takes into account the diverse perspectives and needs of the community it aims to support.
By unveiling this Strategy and Action Plan, the Maltese government reaffirms its commitment to advancing equality and building a more inclusive society.
The plan sets out the government’s vision for the next five years and builds upon the remarkable achievements that have led Malta to secure the highest ranking in the Rainbow Index for the eighth consecutive year.
The launch of this comprehensive strategy marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to protect and promote the rights of LGBTIQ+ individuals in Malta.
With its multifaceted approach and commitment to collaboration, the government is laying the groundwork for a more equal and inclusive future for all citizens.
