Non-Binary Persons To Be Able To Set Preferred Gender On Birth Certificates
A new legislation came into force to allow Non-Binary individuals to be identified as such on birth certificates.
The legislation was passed earlier this summer in July, but it came into effect yesterday, as announced by Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms, Rebecca Buttigieg, during the Connecting Communities LGBTIQ+ Conference.
“The Parliamentary Secretary talks about the amended legislations that took place within the last months in order to provide the right to non-binary individuals to register their preferred gender in their birth certificate,” the secretariat said in a statement “and she further speaks about the amendments that were made in order to strengthen the prohibition of deceptive processes of conversion therapy.”
The option to change or declassify one’s gender was only available on passports and ID Cards as of 2016.
Now, non-binary individuals, meaning, persons identifying with neither male nor female, will be granted the ability to be recognized as ‘X’ even on birth certificates.
“The parliamentary secretary said that since the first ever Pride March in Malta, 20 years ago, a revolution had began in the recognition of rights for individuals in the LGBTIQ+ community in order for the to obtain civil rights, that she states are fundamental human rights,” the statement continues.
The conference aimed at further highlighting the importance of inclusion and the matters related to human rights among the LGBTIQ+ community.
