6 Things That Just Shut Down When It Rains In Malta

As October rolls in, Malta is finally seeing some rain make its way to the islands. And while many will gladly welcome the colder, wetter spells, this weather will also be bringing with it the disruption of many basic things which shouldn’t really be affected, but still magically are every single year.

Here are six things which just stop working when it rains in Malta.

1. Traffic

The very concept of roads and how they should work just comes to a grinding halt when you add a bit of water from the sky.

Somehow, rain creates traffic jams, with many people getting out of their basic schedule. As everyone tries to get to work or school earlier (because reasons), they get caught in an endless queue of cars in an ironic twist of fate.

2. Mobile reception

This one stems from Maltese people’s annual reaction to a little bit of rain. Everyone gets so caught up posting about the rain, or answering their clingy parents’ overly-worried texts, that mobile phone reception across the island instantly dies.

So you end up getting stranded in the middle of nowhere, as the rain and wind pummels you, shouting, “Hello? Can you hear me?” at your phone to reassure everyone you’re still alive.

3. A normal post on Facebook

Yep; if you’ve got some motivational speech to throw at your Facebook friends today, better save it for a sunny day. The only thing which is going to work and get adequate coverage (and likes) is a post about how it’s raining… because you know, you are the only human being in Malta with a direct connection to the outside.

Thank you so much for looking outside the window, seeing it rain, and posting about it Sarah, now we all know.

4. The sewage system

Has it rained for longer than 10 minutes? Well, then you’d better get ready for some overflowing manholes.

Navigating Malta’s roads is about to turn into an underwater maze full of some tricky obstacles. We’re talking exposed holes in the road and water coming down from the sky and up from underground. Fun.

5. Cars

All the things on this list are confusing, but this is all-out supernatural.

The same exact models of cars which can withstand torrential rainfall, strong winds and even snow abroad just somehow start shutting down as soon as there’s a spot of rain in Malta. Get ready to have at least one person who didn’t show up to work or university because his car just wouldn’t start.

Maybe some people will gladly welcome their car not starting and having a valid excuse to skip work for the day, but others would just end up getting stuck in their car angrily shouting at it.

6. Wipers

If your car’s working and you happen to have a route which doesn’t go through a major artery, you’re still not in the clear.

Maybe it’s something to do with how little work Maltese car wipers get over the year, or the amount of dirty, sandy rain the islands get on a regular basis, but there’s a big chance that your wipers just won’t do the trick. You end up getting a sticky, greasy filter to life; the perfect start to your day if you’re into that kind of stuff.

BONUS: People

Sorry; today’s been officially cancelled. “Noħroġ mid-dar f’dix-xita, Ma tarax ħi…”

Rain might be a normal part of everyday life anywhere else on the planet, but in Malta, it’s the perfect excuse to be antisocial, lazy or just incapable of doing anything productive.

They probably wouldn’t even visit their nanna.

Tag a person who just doesn’t function when it rains!
