7 Maltese Pastimes That Will Never Die
You can take the Maltese away from Malta, but you’ll never take the Malta away from the Maltese.
Some things are just written in our DNA, and even if we tell ourselves we hate it, we’ll probably still find ourselves talking about it or being surrounded by it. Here’s our list of things all Maltese people love to do or talk about.
1. Football
Everyone’s got a football team which they support, and it’s always great fun to first of all play the beautiful game and/or discuss them with family, friends and total strangers.
Apart from local rivalries, we’re also blessed (for lack of a better word) to have foreign rivalries across the island. Whether you support England or Italy, any premier league or Seria A team, there’s always too much to discuss with what’s going on in the footballing world.
And even if you hate football, you’re still going to end up talking about it. There’s just not escaping it.
2. Politics
Politics around the world only usually becomes a super hot topic when elections are near.
However (and especially in recent years), political party drama has swept into everyday conversations.
If there’s one topic that will surely come up in a conversation in Malta, it’s one about politics.
3. Gossiping
If there’s one thing that a majority of people around the island love to do, it’s talk about people.
Specifically meet for a coffee, tea, mojito, or beer, and have a full on discussion about literally every bit of juicy drama that went on in everyone’s life.
Lick your lips whilst you rub your hands and enjoy that juicy news.
4. Gaming
Maltese people really love their video games.
Whether it’s Call of Duty, Fortnite, Minecraft, League of Legends, Football Manager, or Fifa, we will always love playing our games.
After a hard day at school, studying or at work, take some time to relax in front of your monitor, and enjoying yourself on console or PC.
And no, there is no age cutoff for this one.
5. Complaining
At a restaurant and the food takes more than four minutes to arrive? Another day stuck in traffic, trying to get across the island during rush hour, whilst the radio plays the same three commercials over and over again?
Why not try complaining?
It’s our sure way method of relieving stress, and bonding with our fellow man.
6. Eating
There is a reason that a new restaurant crops up across the island every other day. Maltese people simply love food.
We look for any occasion to have a reason to go out and fill our stomachs to the brim. With the hundreds of fantastic restaurants across the island, who could blame us for enjoying ourselves?
7. Drinking
A drink a day keeps the doctor away. No, it really doesn’t, but it is a good excuse to tell yourself after the fourth tequila.
Drinking, partying and having a good time is something anyone with Maltese blood in their veins cannot resist. Ibiza? What Ibiza?
