A Brand New Country Has Appeared To The North Of Malta On Instagram
Just because the Maltese Archipelago is tiny, and has been around for thousands of years, that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything new to learn about it even in 2017. Sometimes, we get a gem like Google Flights listing Malta as The Crown Colony of Malta. Now, we’ve got a new hilarious online blunder, and it’s courtesy of the social media giant, Instagram.
While Gozo (along with the other islands in the Maltese Archipelago) does show up in Instagram’s search results, another country also appears right under it… Gozo (Independent State).
There are actually quite a lot of photos which were supposedly uploaded from the “independent state” of Gozo, with the top posts being a veritable mix of before-and-after shots of the Azure Window (of course) and two bare asses on a balcony (as you do).
Adding a custom location on Instagram has gone through different phases over the years. Up till a 2015 update, power users would use the location feature to create custom locations or mock geotags. Later, workarounds where created where accounts synched to Facebook profiles could be used to create your own location. Whether or not Gozo’s latest location is the work of one power user or the later workaround, the supposedly independent state has been getting more traction as of late, with photos being uploaded to the faux-location till this very week.
And while it does seem like most of the people making use of this location are oblivious tourists, maybe this will end up being the subtle way some Gozitans fight for independence from the mainland.
