Kif Qattawni! 9 Things All Maltese People Say About Mosquitoes

Article Featured Image

The time has come again when those tiny little buzzing insects will be everywhere you look. You’ll find them at the beach, in nature, in the middle of a festa, on the sea and sometimes even in your wine glass.

Being the unofficial mascot of the Maltese summer there are some things almost every single Maltese person and even foreigner might say while they’re being ripped to shreds by mosquitoes.

Here are our top nine phrases that form part of most of our vocabulary.

1. Kemm hu fitt

First up is how annoying the mosquitoes actually are. We’re not quite sure why we say this so much, because everyone knows that mosquitoes are annoying, but I guess there’s just something cathartic about complaining.

2. Għalaq in-net warajk!

This is arguably the top phrase your parents or nanniet say when you’re chilling at home. Forgetting to close the net would basically act as an invite to a feeding fest for the mosquitoes. If you leave the net open, you might as well season your skin so that it’s ready for the mozzies next meal.

3. Ma stajtx norqod

Trying to get a goodnight’s sleep when a mosquito has set up camp in your room is nearly impossible. The fact that they manage to always buzz and fly right into your ear is astounding.

4. Festa għamlu bija

Translated to ‘they feasted on me’ this is usually said when someone has more mosquito bites than they can count. Five on your fingers, ten on your legs, another on your back and even one where the sun doesn’t shine, those little things can get into anywhere.

5. Biċċruni

This is a step up from the last one. When you’re absolutely done with being bitten, constantly itching, and having the bites swell up, biċċruni is the word we typically use. Basically meaning that the mosquitoes have cut you up into pieces, because too many mosquito bites can leave you feeling done with the world.

6. Għandek demmek ħelu ħi

Complaining about mosquito bites will inevitably give you this response from most Maltese people. Meaning that you have sweet blood, the whole reason you’re the one that’s being attacked by a army of mosquitoes is that your blood is sweet.

7. Għandkhom spray?

This should be the very first thing you say when you wake up in summer. Get your hands on some insect repellent and apply liberally every five seconds because that’s the only way you won’t’ end up with a trail of mosquito bites down your leg.

8. Fqajt kull m’hawn bir-riħa ta’ citronella

Having a citronella candle or two lying around can be useful for when you’re having a BBQ on the roof or hanging with friends outside. The mosquitoes may be struggling to get close to you but now you need to deal with the horrible smell that has penetrated your entire house.

9. Xtrajtu il-Biogent?

Translating to ‘did you buy the biogent?’ everyone will be saying this phrase by the end of the summer. Being one of the best mosquito traps out there, the biogent trap has been created to catch all of the mosquitoes buzzing around your garden.

Allowing you to use it 24/7, this quiet weatherproof contraption will catch and take care of every single one that’s running about mosquito without being loud or smelly.

Specifically designed to only attract mosquitoes, you won’t be harming the environment and the habitat’s ecosystem with this mosquito trap. No other beneficial insects such as bees will be harmed. Just make sure not to set up the trap too close to lavender and other flowering plants as the bees can get easily confused.

Emitting a human scent, the whole reason that mosquitoes fly right into this mosquito trap and not onto you to suck your blood is that they think the trap is a human. Also, since mosquitoes are weak fliers, the slight suction that is created by the trap’s fan has just enough power to grab a hold of mosquitoes but not anything else.

Catching all the mosquitoes in a net, all you need to do is plug in the biogent and then replace the attract every two months. Get your hands on this high-tech mosquito trap available from authorised resellers.

Being eco-friendly and chemical-free, no toxic chemicals or insecticides are used so you can enjoy a day out in the garden without dealing with mosquitoes or any funky smells emitted by any other type of mosquito trap
