Can Floriana Get The Massive Green Park It Deserves?
21-year-old Floriana PN Local Councillor James Aaron Ellul has proposed an extreme revamp to one of Malta’s most overlooked spaces. On the way to Valletta and a mere couple of hundred metres past the hustle and bustle of Msida, lies a green space thousands of people drive past every day without really taking in.
Sitting just opposite the Sa Maison Ferry Terminal in a very busy intersection that connects Msida, Pieta’ and Floriana, the grove in Sa Maison has been referred to by many names… some of which echo how notoriously shady this place has become. If you were wondering what the place is actually called, though, get ready to be surprised; welcome, to Jubilee Grove.
“In a motion, I’ve proposed that the area becomes a recreational, family park,” said Ellul. “The area is currently not in the best state, but it has enormous potential.” Pointing out how the space is right in the middle of a highly urbanised area, Ellul explained how Jubilee Grove could end up becoming a relaxing getaway from the busy everyday life.
“There’s a need for more security in the whole zone, along with the installation of more waste containers,” he said. “As it stands, the gardens can also have cycle and walking paths integrated within them.” Such initiatives, he argued, would definitely encourage more people to make better use of the open space and even exercise.
“We need to take care of our environment,” Ellul concluded. “Floriana has some of the most beautiful gardens in Malta, and this grove has the potential to be the perfect family park in the middle of all this urban landscape.”
