One Month In, Have You Made Use Of Free Public Transport In Malta?
It has been more than a month since the launch of the Free Public Transport scheme, which allows all Maltese citizens and residents with an identity card to use public transportation for free.
After Luxembourg, Malta became the second nation in Europe to provide free transport.
It is estimated that through this measure, people who make use of public transport daily will save almost €400 per year.
How do I register for this service?
Registration for a Tallinja card is through the Public Transport Authority. Once logged in, a couple of personal details will be requested along with a passport photo. Payment is required for registration and postage fees. The Tallinja card will be sent by registered mail to your home address.
Why do I need the card?
Even though it is no longer required to top up your card it is still important to use it. The responsible authority is monitoring usage and will use the collected data to design a more efficient and effective service.
How do I get to my destination on time?
The Tallinja app is an essential tool to help you plan your journey. Input your destination and departure time and the app will provide information on the selected bus route, when and where to embark, and the length of the journey.
Oh and let’s not forget, all buses offer free Wi-Fi.
Free public transport was introduced with the aim of reducing cars from the road, resulting in less congestion and less pollution of the environment.
Transport Malta have said that results have been encouraging so far. Patronage has increased considerably but there is still much more to be achieved. Public cooperation is essential for this measure to be successful and to bring results.
