Whisper it silently, but there’s something of a revolution taking place within Maltese pharmacies.

Realising that their opening hours are inconveniencing several clients, a number of pharmacies have started installing vending machines outside their outlets.

Pharmacies in Mqabba and Xewkija have already installed them in recent months, and now the Medicaid Pharmacy in Gudja has also joined their ranks as an early adopter.

“Today we are closed, but our new Pharmabox24 is always available for your basic or emergency needs,” the pharmacy said in a Facebook post. “Day and night!! Do not forget to send us a message if you would like to know what we have available at the moment.”

The vending machines are designed by the company Pharmabox24 and sold to pharmacies, which then decide what products to distribute. Of course, prescription drugs and medications aren’t available but one can find items such as emergency first aid kits, sun blocks, condoms, pregnancy tests, deodorants and shampoos.
