IN PHOTOS: Brilliant Flock Of Flamingos Fly Over Malta

Last week, a flock of stunning flamingos brightened up the Maltese horizon as they were spotted flying near the islands. Marcus Camilleri, bird enthusiast and member of the Saint Hubert Hunters, told Lovin Malta how he was lucky to capture the beautiful site on film.
“On the 21st of July, I was at Ba?ar i?-?ag?aq, at the Tas-Safra area facing G?allis rock, hoping and praying to take some shots of oystercatchers as they usually make their first appearance around this time of the year,” he said.
“At approx 11am I caught a glimpse from my left peripheral view of what I initially thought was a sail on the horizon. Checking it out with my binoculars, I quickly realised they were in fact flamingos.”
The flamingos were still faraway until some very lucky human interference
“Two cabin cruisers changed route to take a closer view of the flock which caused some disturbance to the birds, yet it worked in my favour as the birds changed their course from a south-west to a more southerly one and thus came closer to shore,” Camilleri said. “That’s when I started filming.”
“Closer to the shore, the birds gained altitude (they don’t like concrete jungles) and I went back to my binoculars. The last I saw of them was somewhere around the Comino Channel (Fliegu) heading south at a rather high altitude… and I must say, these birds are so beautiful in flight that they leave an indelible print in ones mind and even with your eyes close you can relive that experience over and over again.”
He also captured the long-awaited flock of Oystercatchers in the same spot four days later
