Lofti Power: The Maltese Rap Enigma That Everyone’s Talking About

Article Featured Image

The past week has seen Facebook flooded with Lofti memes – some commenting on his invincibility, and others less benevolent. With everyone directing their energy towards this guy, we asked: who is Lofti? What makes Lofti a Lofti?

Lovin Malta sat down with the man himself to discuss everything from music to relationships and some existential questions too.

Lofti inherited his nickname from his father. When his dad was young, everyone used to call him il-Lofti, and you know how family nicknames go here in Malta – they get inherited by children more often than not. So when he grew up a bit, everyone started calling him Lofti iż-Żghir. (Lofti Junior)

The new rapper is probably the most chill person we’ve had the grace to sit down with. When asked if he plans on releasing an album he told us “Fil-ħajja ħadd ma jaf x’hemm jistenniħ ‘il quddiem. Forsi ‘il quddiem ijja, m’għandix għalfejn le. Naraw.”  (You never know what’s next for you in life. Maybe in the future, yes there’s no reason for me not to. We’ll see.)

His chill attitude might come from all the hate he has been receiving – he’s had to develop thick skin. Of course, reading his haters’ comments does sting him a bit. He does feel a little bit down sometimes, but he doesn’t really give a fuck about that.

Lofti tells us that whatever you do in life, you will always find someone who will try to drag you down or make you feel like shit, so he just does what he feels is right, “Jien inkompli għaddej. Għax imbilli in-nies iwaqqawni għan-nejk mhux ħa noqgħod naqta’ qalbi, my life my way.” he told us. (I will keep going on, even if people make fun of me. My life my way.)

His interest in hip hop and rap music started blooming at a very young age, however he truly became inspired to pave his way in the music industry when he first heard Hooligan’s first album. Remember that one? So basically Hooligan inspired Lofti, but when he saw other Maltese rappers also doing it, he decided that he should try his hand at it, given how much he loves that style.

“I always liked it, I got really into it when I heard Hooligan’s first album — after that I was seeing how other Maltese people were doing it and I started liking Maltese rap even more”

Sometimes Lofti plans out his rhymes by writing them, but at other times he just does it in spirtu pront — “my life, my way” he tells us adamantly, and frankly, he’s right.

Lofti is still single for all you ladies out there — he is quite comfortable like this and he would rather focus on his career, however if he finds a girl who respects him and treats him right, he’d be more than willing to settle down.

However he thinks that this is difficult due to certain heartaches he went through in his life. He used to date someone for six months, however she was literally playin’ him.

She told him she had a staff party and he was chill with that, only he wasn’t when he practically caught her cheating on a bench in his own neighbourhood. Needless to say, he was done with that relationship.

Lofti is not too picky about his rhymes. He does, however, prefer his mother tongue over English. He feels more confident doing what he loves most in Maltese rather than in English.

He also likes all kinds of music, just not rock which he really dislikes with a passion. When asked who his favourite artists are he did not hesitate to tell us — Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Eazy E and Tyga.

We also went a bit deeper into that and asked him who he would collaborate with if he ever had the chance — he really should choose the best, he told us. So he again chose his four favourite artists as his go-to answer.

“Thanks for the support and for the nice comments, I love you all from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for everything.”

Lofti had a couple of messages to give out to both his fans and his haters. He humbly gave a message to all his fans out there: “Thanks for the support and for the nice comments, I love you all from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for everything.”

“Thank you all, but I’m still here. If you don’t like me don’t worry, just block me,” Lofti tells his haters.

This interview went down the rabbit-hole of emotions. We had to fit in a couple of existential questions because you know, us.

We asked Lofti what would he do if the world had to end within a week, and the answer is the one we least imagined. “I would tell both my mom and dad that I love them a lot. Than we will wait and see how things go”
