Malta Reacts To Edward Zammit Lewis Holding A Symbolic Flag – Here’s What Went Down
If you thought a stripper being pelted by eggs was the only controversial topic this week, then you’re wrong.
After what happened when Equality Minister Edward Zammit Lewis posted a photo of him holding an LGBTQI+ flag, we’re now certain that Maltese people will always find some way to get offended.
This incident is a classic example of people making a mountain out of a molehill and here’s how it all went down.
It all started with this photo of Edward …
… holding a Maltese flag painted with the ‘LGBTQI+’ colours.
Dr Zammit Lewis posed for the photo after the Ministry renewed their commitment to support #MaltaPride this year. It was then posted on the Malta Pride Facebook page and later shared to Zammit Lewis’ page. And that’s when shit hit the fan…
What do you get when you mix two sensitive topics like LGBTQI+ rights and Maltese nationalism together? A boiling pot of hateful comments from Maltese keyboard warriors eager to share their opinions in the comments section, obviously.
And some people went all out…
Yeeeesh, things were starting to heat up for the Equality Minister, especially when this guy chimed in…
Luckily, Zammit Lewis had the backing of Bis-Serjetà, who saw this as the perfect opportunity to take a jab at Edwin and came up with this beautiful meme in response to his post…
…whilst also pointing out that Malta’s biggest priorities have now shifted from stranded migrants in the Meditteranean to, umm, a piece of cloth?
But of course, it wasn’t all that bad. A lot of people understood that Zammit Lewis’ actions were merely a gesture to support the LGBTIQ+ community, and no one actually wants to change the flag.
Others even pointed out the fact that the Maltese flag has been altered in the past to push certain agendas, including having had Simon Busuttil’s face on it.
It sure has been fun, and bizarre, watching all this unfold from the sidelines. From calling Zammit Lewis the ‘spawn of Satan’ to commending him for his actions, it appears that Malta’s community is still pretty divided when it comes to the topic of LGBTIQ+ issues.
But now that we’ve all had our fun, let’s get back to focusing on the real issues at hand people.
Oh and, just to make it clear one more time. Literally no one ever suggested changing the flag.
