Malta’s Gay Community Wants To Create A Giant Rainbow Flag, And They Need Your Help

Gay Malta is raising money to create a giant rainbow flag to be used at Malta Pride and commemorate the upcoming Marriage Equality Bill.

Perfectly coinciding with the upcoming Malta Pride celebrations in Valletta this September, the flag would be the perfect way to add even more colour to Malta’s capital.

The crowdfunding campaign is aiming to create a 25-metre (82 foot) flag, similar to the one which was used in London’s Pride celebrations along Oxford Street a few years ago. There’s even a mock-up image of what the giant flag would look like in the streets of Valletta, and it looks amazing.

Malta has seen an impressive year when it comes to gay rights. This time last year, a gay couple became the first in Malta to adopt a child in the wake of Maltese Civil Unions, which have been described as equal to marriage. But with legislation on gay marriage finally getting ever closer, it seems like it’s only going to get better for the Maltese LGBTQI community by the end of 2017.

Gay Malta has offered different rewards for people who donate to the cause, from an opportunity to hold the flag during Pride to an honorary mention as the Main Giant Flag Donor.

“If the funding will not be sufficient this year round, the money will be brought forward until enough money is raised for a giant flag to be used at future Prides,” the organisation declared, clearly not giving up on this dream. “If any extra funds are raised, they will be invested in further equipment and embellishment for Pride.”
