Malta’s Kilimanjaro Challenge Group are known for doing their utmost to help others. This year, the group of 15 volunteers took to a more local and heartwarming approach, visiting the graves of 800 children this Sunday in order to leave special notes and beautiful white flowers donated by Flower Land for this occasion.

This latest initiative marked the launch of the Kilimanjaro Flower Campaign, which is aimed at marking this solemn week of remembrance in Malta.

“The annual challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is already an activity that is well associated with helping young children in other countries,” Kilimanjaro Challenge founder Keith Marshall said. “However, this year the group felt the need to reach out into the realities of the local situation.”

“We have not been able to help or support any of the 800 children we visited today,” Keith told Lovin Malta. “However, we came here to show empathy and offer respect two traits of human compassion that society should always engage in. Especially where young children are involved.”

The founder hopes that this activity will be held again in the coming years, with more support and participants.

Over the past 11 years, the group has collected over €720,000 for 10 projects in Kenya and Ethiopia, all of which were orchestrated by the missionary movement, founded by the late Fr George Grima.

The projects which were financed by the Kilimanjaro Challenge included the construction of a school and convent in Bulbula (Ethiopia), a house hosting 100 physically impaired children in Kenya, a clinic in Sakko and another four Kindergarten schools in Ethiopia.

This year, these guys are aiming to collect €90,000 to finance the completion of a centre for disabled children in Bonga, Ethiopia. This project was started by Fr. George Grima… who never got to see the completion.
