Maltese Weightlifters Shine At World Championships In Norway

Three Maltese athletes recently represented the island at the World Weightlifting Championships in Forde, Norway, showing grit, determination, and a glimpse of the country’s growing strength in the sport.
Roberta Tabone led the charge in the women’s 69kg category, opening strong in the snatch with lifts of 84kg, 86kg, and 88kg. She followed up with a solid clean and jerk of 109kg, narrowly missing 112kg, and finished with a total of 197kg, placing second in her group.
Fellow competitor Tenishia Thornton, who is currently recovering from an injury, faced challenges in her 69kg category, failing her first snatch attempt at 100kg and ultimately having to withdraw due to pain.
The team remains hopeful she will be back at full strength for the European Junior Championships in three weeks.
On the men’s side, Rylee Borg delivered a strong performance, hitting 117kg and 120kg in the snatch and 153kg and 156kg in the clean and jerk, just missing out on his final attempts. His combined total of 276kg earned him fifth place in his group.
The championships also doubled as a qualification event for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, marking an important milestone for all three athletes.
The Maltese team’s participation was made possible thanks to the support of the Maltese Olympic Committee and SportMalta.
