Maltese Woman Told To ‘Put On Some Clothes’ When Working Out In Her Sports Bra
Gym and jumpers are a mix that just don’t go together. However, sports bras and a gym workouts do. Or so you might think.
Over the weekend, a young Maltese woman was told by a fitness instructor to “put some clothes on” when working out in her sports bra.
The woman pointed out that her clothes were not at all revealing and that she was working out in her sports bra because she felt too hot otherwise. But she was not allowed this comfort and was told by a fitness instructor to cover up, even being forced to continue in a thick jumper after being told she “should wear it”.
While the post was quick to gather a number of shocked reactions, it turns out health professionals were involved in the introduction of the controversial policy
In the discussion that followed on the Are You Being Served post, the young woman stated that the gym manager called her to explain that one of the reasons for the policy was that “after consulting with health professionals it was realised that wearing sports bras may intimidate people who have just started their fitness journey and may not be as confident.”
The young women said that she was understanding of the gym’s policies, but had just wished that someone took the time to explain it to her in order to save her the embarrassment, misunderstanding and anger.
Even after the woman cleared their air, the gym’s policy still got some slack from the public for being so misinformed. Most people had a very simple question; aren’t sports bras meant to be worn for… well, doing sports?
Others pointed towards the hypocrisy with gyms trying to promote a fair environment for its gym members by regulating gym wear, but then promoting images of women in sports bras in their advertisements.
But a lot of the conversation directed towards what women can wear vs what men can wear.
Because, at the end of the day, why must one gender be more constricted than the other when working out?
There were those who said that if you don’t like the rule, then change gym. After all, this policy isn’t implemented everywhere and there are many other gyms around.
