Malta was battered with heavy winds and rough seas Wednesday and Thursday morning, leading to destroyed boats and windswept avenues, as well as a portable toilet ending up in the middle of a main road in Sliema.

However, Maltese photographer Joanna Demarco captured images of people waiting at a bus stop in Sliema that shows that Malta’s east coast wasn’t let off easy, even as the afternoon broke.

One picture shows four people standing atop the seat at a bus stop to avoid the churning waters. It is unknown whether they were actually waiting for a bus or not, or just trying to keep their feet dry.

With high levels of water being reported everywhere from Sliema to Xemxija, and authorities issuing warnings for the next couple of days, it would be best to always ensure you know where your nearest bus stop is located, just in case you need to escape the rising waters.
