Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader Robert Abela said that the Government is working to present the best Budget for the country, tax-free, with stable energy bills, increased social investment, and strengthened incentives for the middle class and businesses. During an interview with ONE News Head Josef Caruana, Dr Abela explained that sector-by-sector discussions are currently underway to allocate funds for the projects and initiatives needed to continue improving the quality of life for Maltese and Gozitan citizens.

The Prime Minister said that while others are quietly searching for a party leader, a five-year term within a 12-year span, the Labour Government is focusing on strengthening services and creating initiatives to address people’s realities. He announced that the Paola Hub will operate at full capacity in the coming weeks and will help reduce pressure on Mater Dei Hospital in the provision of healthcare services. He also highlighted the difference services like IVF for couples wishing to become parents, increased palliative care with a new ward now also at St Vincent de Paul, as well as new treatments for prostate cancer patients, are making in people’s lives.

Regarding driving, Dr Abela said that drivers have a major responsibility and it is unacceptable to drink and drive or drive under the influence of drugs. He announced that the presence of Transport Malta, LESA, and Police officers on the roads will be increased, a holistic review of penalties, including the deterrent element, is being studied, and educational campaigns on this matter will also be conducted.

Asked about public cleanliness, the Prime Minister responded that the Government is investing millions of euros in state-of-the-art machinery to ensure greater cleanliness in the country. Regarding the BCRS machines, Dr Abela said their availability has improved by 4,800 hours per month, while the pilot project currently benefits around 250 elderly people per week in 20 locations. He announced that the project will soon be expanded to 30 locations, and from the beginning of next year, it will be rolled out across all of Malta and Gozo.

The Prime Minister also referred to the latest developments in the war between Ukraine and Russia, saying that important talks are ongoing and emphasising that diplomacy will lead to solutions. Regarding the Middle East, he said that after 40 years Malta will formally recognise the Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly.
