11 Small But Beautiful Signs Summer In Malta Is On Its Way

As the weather gets warmer, we may already be panicking about the soon-to-be-unbearable heat, but before we get too deep down that rabbit hole, it’s important to take some time to appreciate the beautiful first signs that summer is on its way.

Here are 11 things to watch out for these next few weeks to make your days a little brighter.

1. The morning warmth on your face

No more hiking your scarf above your nose to ensure it doesn’t fall off. Walking out into the morning light is pleasant enough to make the grumpiest person smile. It’s nowhere near as uncomfortably hot as it will get, and the morning sunlight tickles your face as a greeting.

2. The slight breeze in your hair while driving

You’ve finally started rolling down the windows, and while your karaoke sessions may have to be turned down a couple of notches, the gentle breeze that blows through your hair as you drive is beautiful.

3. The lighter sheets on your bed

You no longer need to bury yourself in five quilts and two blankets. Now it’s just you and a sheet gently laying on your body. Bliss.

4. The sounds of the outside world from an open window

You finally open the window without risking a flood and hear the soft sounds of traffic humming outside and if you’re lucky, birds chirping. How lovely.

5. The temptation to pull over in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq and get ice cream

Soft serve with a freezer-expanded flake and some karawett. Sold.

6. Leaving the office in broad daylight

You no longer run to your car under the cover of darkness – there’s still so much life left in the day (and you) when you leave the office.

7. No longer seeing your veins through your skin

What’s this on your skin? A tan?! Magical.

8. Artists start releasing new music

You start hearing songs you know are going to be summer classics. You’re still not sure of the lyrics yet but you’ll be reciting them backwards soon enough.

9. Insects start buzzing

Nobody wants a fly trapped in their room, but walking past green spaces reminds you how quiet everything gets in winter.

10. The smells of the island start coming to life

From sea salt to that one friend who is already wearing sunblock, the smells so many island dwellers love start coming to life around this time. They’re not overwhelming yet, but they are beautiful.

11. And the sea is calling your name

As many things you may not like about living on an island, everyone born here knows the call of the sea all too well. Glittering and bright, walking past any body of water becomes harder to resist, and the need to shed your responsibilities and spend the day at the beach becomes overwhelming.
