Littering and countless black bags being carelessly thrown all around our streets have sadly become part and parcel of living in Malta, and the constant heatwaves sure make for some smelly sightings. Wanting to take matters into their own hands, someone put up a DIY sign to stop litterers in his street and in front of his shop… and of course, it backfired.
In a photo shared on Facebook on Sunday night, a shopfront in St Paul’s Bay can be seen sporting some unusual signs… including one that specified NO RUBBISH HERE, complete with an arrow pointing right next to the door.
Understandable? Sure, especially if all the locals’ complaints and vigilante actions amidst St. Paul’s Bay degrading situation are to be believed. In fact, if anything, the photo taken last night merely proves just how big of a problem residents might have with their waste management.
Casually, someone dumped a couple of black rubbish bags in front of the shop anyway… just this time, dumping them a couple of centimetres to the side of the arrow
There’s pettiness, there’s trolling, then there’s this.
And, to be honest, as one cheeky Facebook comment stated, whoever it was technically obeyed the sign.
According to the man who originally posted the photo, the shop is actually a car hire garage in Triq Parti Calleja (which explains the “No Parking, Garage In Use Every Minute” sign).
A quick search for the street on Google Street not only confirms this, but actually shows a similar pile of rubbish left right in front of the garage all the way back in November 2016. No wonder the guy felt like he had to put up a new sign to specify where exactly he didn’t want people dumping their rubbish.
