Watch: Over 3,000 Stairlift Applications Approved As Government Invests €18 Million In Accessibility Scheme

More than 3,000 households in Malta and Gozo have benefitted from the government’s stairlift scheme since it was launched, with a total investment of over €18 million, the Ministry for Social and Affordable Accommodation announced.
Speaking at a press conference, Minister Roderick Galdes revealed that by the end of last month alone, over €4.5 million had already been invested this year to help families improve accessibility in their homes.
The scheme aims to support elderly people, persons with disabilities, or individuals with mobility issues by funding the installation of stairlifts in residential properties.

Between 2023 and this year, more than 1,600 stairlifts have been approved, including 454 applications in 2024 alone, averaging out to more than one approved application every day.
“Since the scheme was launched, nearly 3,000 applications have been approved. The goal is to give elderly citizens the opportunity to remain living in their homes and communities by strengthening accessibility. This investment directly improves quality of life for seniors, those with mobility problems, and people with particular needs,” Minister Galdes said.
The stairlift scheme, administered by the Housing Authority, funds up to €7,000 of the installation costs.
Housing Authority CEO Matthew Zerafa added that through initiatives like this, the Authority is ensuring that people can continue to live with dignity and independence in the same communities they grew up in.
