The complaint ended up spilling over into the comments section, and while some agreed with the post’s OP (original poster), others were quick to point out some flaws in their argument.

“You’d expect them to take it seriously,” one comment read, with others suggesting media houses needed to intervene for the government to take it seriously, with one Maltese person saying they found issues with all four of their documents.

“People here who don’t have a problem are plebs, I’m sorry, this is disgraceful,” another read, with suggestions being made for  bodies like Identita’ and the Commission to be involved in the complaint. “Address this to the official channels,” another read. “What is a post on Reddit going to get?”

Other Redditors, however, took a different angle.

“This probably came as a format from the EU, complain directly, not to Malta,” one said, as another pointed out that since “passports have machine readable data, all the human readable text on there is fluff”.

“I suspect it’s on purpose to tell apart counterfeit passports, which in Malta is a very likely problem,” another chimed in. “Counterfeit ones will probably use the ‘correct’ spelling in other languages to get caught. I don’t think it was anyone from Malta who got the translation but someone from the EU provided them.”

“Greek is not exactly wrong, but in the wrong form,” one user clarified. “Essentially saying ‘of the European Union’, so it’s not a typo. Seems like someone with Google Translate put in ‘European Union passport’, which in Greek would convert to equivalent of European Union’s passport, or passport of the European Union.”

And of course, there had to be that one comment to point out OP’s typos, replying with a cheeky “mistakes are not acceptable”.
