A Maltese youth has been forced to clarify what really went down in a TikTok video that apparently showed him entering a Maltese shop, licking a granita from the freezer, before putting it back.

“So I know my video from Facebook is getting a lot of hate, and I just wanted to clear it up that it is a skit, it is all acting, we did ask for permission to film, we did purchase the items and obviously took them out of the fridge. I thought it would be obvious enough, I thought it was obvious it was a joke, but I guess it’s not so obvious, I just wanted to clear it up and yeah, have a nice day,” the youth said this morning.

The video, which was originally hosted on the video-sharing website TikTok, has since been shared around Maltese social media, and was quickly and roundly condemned.

Micallef also made a separate post clarifying the situation further

“I’ve just come across this video. Very good, you find this guy and then someone goes and buys that same ice-cream for their kids? This is in Malta! As soon as we have proof that it was a joke I’ll excuse myself, but as it is we ave no proof that he took the same granita and not another one,” said one woman.

This video comes after a spate of similar ice-cream-licking crimes around the world, with one woman facing up to 20 years in prison for putting back licked ice-cream.
