Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Galea-Curmi condemned violence against journalists in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza, and appealed that they should be “allowed to carry out their work and the responsibility they have.”

This call came on a day when around 200 media outlets from about 50 different countries, including Malta, joined together in an appeal to stop the killing of journalists in Gaza and to demand access for international media.

Referring to today’s Gospel (Lk 4:16-30), when Jesus was not accepted by his own people because he spoke the truth, Bishop Galea-Curmi compared the persecution unto death suffered by Jesus to what journalists are going through: “The work of journalists is precisely to show us this reality, the truth of the situation. That is why it is so grave that you even kill those who are showing the truth and seek to eliminate those who are revealing reality.”

He recalled that it was thanks to the work of journalists that the world learned of the tragedy of 7th October caused by Hamas, as well as the atrocities being carried out by the Israeli army, where “there is destruction of a people, of so many people, of so many children who are being killed there, of people who are dying of hunger, of people who are being forced to leave their country.”

The Auxiliary Bishop prayed to the Lord “that we may have the grace, like Him, to always remain determined and courageous in doing what we are responsible for, and to fulfil our duties faithfully.”
