Malta’s most beloved rabbit is celebrating a big milestone. The ‘Fonzu l-Fenek’ song, a cheerful tune that has become a childhood classic for many across the islands, has now been streamed over two million times on YouTube.

The song, written and composed by Michael Piscopo in 2013, was part of the wider Fonzu l-Fenek initiative, aimed at teaching kids about healthy eating, sustainability, and respect for the environment. With its catchy lyrics and playful vibe, the tune quickly became a favourite in schools, at events, and even at home, making Fonzu a household name.

Prof. Suzanne Piscopo, who co-created Fonzu with her husband Michael, says the music played a massive role in building that popularity:

“Wherever we go – in schools, local council events or other occasions. people of all ages know the song by heart (or at least the refrain) and are keen to sing along. It is a happy tune that brings joy to those who sing or listen to it, whilst passing on some important educational messages.”

Michael attributes the song’s success to its simple but unforgettable melody, memorable lyrics, and the performance of singer Phyllisienne Brincat, who also arranged the music.

“Not many songs in Maltese hit these numbers,” he explained. “We’re so proud, and grateful for the support we continue to get from parents, grandparents, educators, and of course the thousands of young Fonzu fans. It keeps us going.”

From the classroom to YouTube fame, Fonzu l-Fenek has crossed generations, spreading joy while encouraging healthier lifestyles. And now, with millions of plays to his name, Malta’s favourite bunny has become a bona fide YouTube star.
