Commuters driving through Gżira, Ta’ Xbiex and particularly Msida had an awful end to their week… on Car-Free Day, of all days.

Soon after 6pm, reports and social media posts started coming in of an absolute gridlock around the bustling area, with many wondering why traffic was so particularly bad. It didn’t take long, however, for people to find out the ironic reason behind the never-ending traffic jam.

It turns out that, as part of Mobility Week, the Msida Local Council and Transport Malta came together for Active In The Square, an event from 7pm to 10pm involving everything from go-karts to bouncing castles.

Many of the thousands of people trying to drive through the area were not having it, however, with videos shared online showing the sheer scale of the gridlock as people reportedly exited their cars and abandoned them to wait by the side of the road.
