Crime drama Gomorra has gradually become one of the most popular TV series to ever come out of Italy. Based on a best-selling exposé of the Naples Mafia, the series boasts a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating of 96%, and has a powerful soundtrack to go with it courtesy of post-rock band Mokadelic. Now, the five-piece band behind it all are coming to Malta.

Mokadelic will be performing the entire soundtrack of Gomorra, which is currently breaking national records in its third season. The band be bringing their signature dark and menacing tones to our islands, echoing the unrelenting, tense scenes of the crime drama. It’s going to be their first time ever performing outside of Italy, and they’ll be celebrating that milestone with a double-gig treat in Valletta.

Gomorra currently has a total of 36 episodes, and is sitting on a cool average of 1.2 million viewers per episode. A 2008 film which preceded it has been hailed as “a modern classic”, winning countless awards including the Grand Prix Cannes the year of its release.

Soundtracks have always been an essential part of Mokadelic’s opus. Back in 2008, Oscard award winner Gabriele Salvatores (Mediterraneo) had chosen the post-rock band to score his 2008 drama Come Dio Comanda. 

This definitely influenced the five-piece outfit, formed in Rome nearly two decades ago, to embrace the best film has to offer. “We decided to integrated images to sounds in our live sets and it turned out to be one of the coolest ideas we’ve ever had,” the five-piece had said in an interview a couple of years back.

For fans of Malta’s own alternative music scene, relative newcomers Eyes to Argus (who are fresh off the release of their debut album VEER) will be gracing the stage before the Italian giants on both nights.

The Maltese experimental band will no doubt be bringing its own brand of energy to the performance, and it’s all set to be one great mix of unrelenting post-rock madness.

The concerts are being organised by alternative music promoters HairyAmp in collaboration with Valletta 2018, and are going down at the University Campus Theatre (ex MITP) in the capital city on the 23rd and 24th February.
