Malta Public Transport Have Just Registered Their 300,000th Tallinja Card User
Since its launch three years ago, 300,000 people have registered for a Tallinja Card. Malta Public Transport kicked off this new payment system back in 2015, which has different capping systems varying from daily to monthly ones.
The lucky 300,000th Tallinja Card holder, who registered about three years after the card came into circulation, was given free travel for one whole year.
Emanuel Farrugia will now not only benefit from 12 whole months of free travel, but will also be able to benefit from special services, direct services and even night services for absolutely no charge.
“Together with the new vehicles, the changes to the route network and the Tallinja App, the introduction of the Tallinja Card has been one of the most important changes introduced to public transport locally,” Malta Public Transport Commercial Director Daniel Grech said. “Not only does the Tallinja Card offer its holder reduced fares when travelling by bus, but it also improves boarding time and eliminates the need to carry spare change.”
During the past three months, over 162,000 individual Tallinja Card holders have travelled using their card, which marks an increase of 6% over last year.
More than 75,000 of the 300,000 Tallinja Card holders are aged over 60, paying only 25c per trip for public transport, with a daily capping of 50c and a weekly capping of €2.
An average of 6,000 passengers (mostly daily commuters) reach their capping limit by the second week of the month, enjoying free travel during the rest of that month.
