Malta’s Youth Council Holding Anti-Racism Fair Tonight
Malta’s National Youth Council will this evening hold an anti-racism event in front of the law courts in Valletta – complete with music, poetry and New York Best pizza.
The fair, called ‘Raise Your Voice’, will encourage people to speak up when witnessing racism and other forms of discrimination and to spread the message of peace and respect.
It will start at 7pm with a performance by local rapper Hooli, followed by a gig by the band The Crowns – whose guitarist is Gianluca Cappitta, an immigration lawyer who had earlier this year defended a group of Malians who were unnecessarily detained for three months.
Afterwards, there will be a concert in which local poets Rachelle Deguara and Leanne Ellul will perform Maltese language poems to the audience, delivered in a ‘Spoken Word’ style.
During the event, local food chain joint New York Best will be selling slices of pizza to people. New York Best was roped in because its owners Tommy and Nicky Diacono had criticised racism when the far-right ‘Patriots’ Movement’ had famously pulled down their ‘Last Supper’ poster depicting Jesus and the disciples eating fast food.
At the end of the event, the National Youth Council will launch a document with recommendations on how to clamp down on racism, which it will present to the government for action.
